Oooh- another program to learn commands for! I haven’t even thought of looking up WordPress’ commands. (Left Align in WordPress is Alt + Shift + L, but Bold is still Control + B. Sneaky, sneaky!)
But the post for here and now will be the Keystrokes- not commands- for Word 2010. These are the tricksy Kaystrokes needed to access items in the Ribbon Bar. (At least a more direct method than Tabbing or Arrow Keying through the Ribbon Bar.) It’s true, there are commands for most actions in Word that are much more direct than this list. I teach keyboard commands in my nine to five. The idea is for this comprehensive list to be a reference for those odd items that there may not be a command for. Example: Bullets. You have to set up something to access bullets by command. I recently added Bullets to my Quick Access Toolbar so that now I can press Alt and 1 to access my Bullet options. But had I not wanted to set up something specific I could check the list below and see that I could also get to Bullets by pressing Alt + H and then U.
Oh and let me just say this is intended for use by persons with visual impairments- when it’s not an option to just look up and click on the tity bitty icon that corresponds with the desired action. ‘Cause that’s what I do: teach assistive technology techniques!! Exciting I’m sure. Thrilling even. But here it is:
WORD 2010 RIBBON KEY STROKES
NOTES ON KEYSTROKES AND RIBBONS:
To move from the document to the Ribbons press Alt by itself.
To leave the Ribbons press Alt once more.
To go to a specific Ribbon Heading press Alt and the Letter indicated for each heading.
Example: Page Layout is Alt + P.
To go to the specific feature find the letters that correspond with the action.
Example: The option to change the document’s Orientation is located in the Page Layout Ribbon. Press Alt + P to move to Page Layout. Next, press O to move to Orientation.
* An Asterisk by a Ribbon item indicates that there is a Sub-Menu. This means that there are options to choose from in a list. Use the Arrow Keys to find the desired option. Press Enter to choose that option.
Example: Press Alt + H to move to the Home Menu. Press V for Paste. The selection is not immediately pasted. There are a few options for pasting the selection. Press Up and Down Arrow Keys to choose the desired method for pasting. Press Enter to paste the selection.
Alternatively, if there is no asterisk by an item, the action will happen immediately:
Example: Press Alt + H to go to the Home Menu. Press A R for Align Right and the alignment will automatically change. No other options are offered with that command, the action is immediate.
**Two Asterisks indicates a Menu – The keystroke will redirect away from the ribbons and open a menu.
Example: Press Alt + H to get to the Home ribbon. Next, press FN to get to the Font Menu. This will move your cursor away from the ribbons and to a separate menu that appears on the screen. (This happens to be the old Font Menu- nothing has changed here!)

Tab (6 times) until you get to the Main Tabs tree view. Down Arrow to “Developer”. Press Space to add the Developer Ribbon and then press Enter for Ok. Now, past the View Ribbon will be another heading titled Developer. Access this by pressing Alt + L. To insert a Checkbox press Alt + L and then F. A checkbox will appear at your text cursor’s location.
Alternatively there is a feature under Customize Ribbons that allows the user to create a ribbon, name it and decide which elements will be added.
